Nationals 8 - Mets 7
Mets Pitchers Continue Ugly Habit of Making Excuses
Bumpkin
Bobby Parnell let down his team tonight with an amateur performance in an 8-7 loss to the nationals. Parnell came on for the save in the bottom of the 9th protecting a 7-6 lead - a lead the Mets fought hard to earn, climbing out of an early 5-0 hole, thanks to 2 run jacks from Jason Bay and Nick Evans and a clutch 7th inning sac fly from Lucas Duda.
Manny Acosta road the wave of emotion throwing smoke to preserve the lead; setting the stage for flamethrower Bobby Parnell to bury the lifeless Nats. Parnell - oblivious to his teams emotional rush - wandered in from the pen like he was meeting Pa at the local fishing hole.
Mariano Rivera enters the game to blaring Metallica music. Bobby Parnell's soundtrack is the Andy Griffith theme. Large Mouth Bass might fear Parnell's homespun "Shazam Andy, it was the carburetor all along not the fuel pump" expression but major league hitters don't. The Nationals saw that brain dead gaze and figured after they had their way with Bobby, they would head back to the house and chow down on Aunt Bee's cherry pie. Then they would ask her if she baked anything.
After the game Goober said he had "great stuff" but was "wild." Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop! For gods sake Bobby stop making excuses. You were awful and your stuff was garbage. Again, because you throw hard does not mean you have great stuff.
Great stuff moves and dances and paints the corners. Great stuff leaves batters baffled and off balance. Great stuff does not touch the sweet spot of the bat. Great stuff does cause your third baseman and shortstop to hit the deck to avoid being killed by a line drive. You do not have great stuff.
Jon Niese and Mike Pelfrey make the same excuses. If you are awful own up to it. Terry Collins should not tolerate excuses. You are Major League pitchers. Act like it. Unfortunately, Terry joined in tonight boasting about how Parnell shattered Zimmerman's bat on the game winning hit.
Terry, the bases were loaded because "good old country hardball' couldn't hit the broad side of Otis the Drunk's ass. "Great stuff Andy...shazam!"
